A Volunteer’s experience in Greece so beautifully shared by our current volunteer, Sierra Hatch // “I’ve been here for a month now. It’s so crazy how quickly the time has passed. I was originally supposed to head home this week, but my heart would not allow for that and I’ve decided to stay on for the rest of the 11 week program!
Every time I’ve attempted to post I’ve felt like I have either written too much or not enough. I think it comes down to the fact that I don’t know if my words will do this experience justice. The emotions and love that have been pouring from me since arriving here is like nothing I’ve experienced before. I have the unique privilege of working with refugees who have landed on the Island of Lesvos in Greece. The incredible team I work with and I get to perform different tasks inside Moria (the camp where nearly 22,000 refugees are currently living). Moria life is not easy or pretty. It is raw and real and incredibly difficult, but I am continually witnessing amazing people do their best under horrible circumstances. As part of this program we teach english, do laundry, help with food distribution and plan and coordinate activities for the boys amongst other things. All of the tasks we are performing are great, but my favorite thing about this whole experience is getting to know all of these resilient and strong people. To know them is to love them and I have found that love continues to expand daily.
I am grateful everyday for this experience that is knocking my world off of its axis. Opening my eyes to the differences and ultimately the similarities that connect us all as humans. I’ll share more soon, until then, thank you, thank you, thank you to all of the wonderful people who have helped me to get here. 💙” #helpintl #helpgreece #helprefugees
